Desiree by Ken Goldman, is a story that from the very first page entices you in and seduces you just like the title character does to her unfortunate victims. It is engaging and ingenious and macabre, and the writing style reminded me of early Stephen King and to some extent, his novel Carrie, purely because of the mother/daughter theme.
Desiree Chappelle is a beautiful young woman whose mother goes to extreme lengths to stop her from having any boyfriends. Mother's milk is not just for nourishment and for feeding a growing baby girl, it becomes a panacea, something along with a series of seemingly magical chants that makes sure that every man Desiree kisses meets a thorny end.
Tamara Drenoff is Desiree's adversary, the twin sister of one of Desiree's unfortunate lovers and the fiance of an intended one. Throughout the story, she battles with inner demons and the ghost of her dead brother as she decides how to deal with Desiree, the woman she blames for so much misery in her life.
Desiree is a compelling character. While being the seductress that has men literally falling at her feet, she is also a victim in that she had no idea of what her deranged mother had been doing to her. She carried an innocence that made me feel sorry for her in the end.
Throughout the story, I had come to the conclusion that there were no real bad guys as such, no antagonists that stood out, just messed up people trying to work out what was happening to them, but the ending had me re-thinking my opinion and I'm not sure it sat well with the rest of the story. On the whole though, I really enjoyed Desiree. It was extremely well written and suitably horrifying and if the ending was not what I expected, the rest more than made up for it.
