A Tale of Two Hearts Book 2 in Once Upon a Dickens Christmas Michelle Griep 9781683222590 Books

The first book in the series is titled, 12 Days at Bleakly Manor and coming in the Fall of 2019 is book #3 titled, The Old Lace Shop.
Here is a very heart-gripping story of redemption, love and second chances. The main couple in the books is Mina who helps her father keep an inn and Will who is a law clerk. Believe me when I say there is definitely more than this to the tale in the pages.
I loved the historical setting in London in the year 1853, along with hopes expressed by Mina and her unending love of reading books! Her father doesn’t like her reading, filling her head with the thoughts of romance and more but that doesn’t keep Mina from her books. She has an elderly lady friend who shares her books with Mina and encourages her to read and read.
At a time in history when books were a treasure and not easily procured, it makes me very grateful for the books I get the blessing to read and share with others! You’ll love how the story reveals the love of God and His constantly extending to us His forgiveness. How people used to quote books and then see if they could name the story it comes from to the delight of another voracious reader is another aspect of the story that I enjoyed.
With being able to read and either borrow or purchase books, what a gift it is to give to others! Consider giving classics and new tales such as this book to those you know or maybe a stranger, so they can escape to the world of wonder found in books!

A Tale of Two Hearts Book 2 in Once Upon a Dickens Christmas Michelle Griep 9781683222590 Books Reviews

In 1853 London, Mina Scott, daughter of a lowly innkeeper, dreams of life among the wealthy and elite. Her love of reading, especially authors like Charles Dickens, takes her places she could never go. Unfortunately, her parent’s voice pulls her out of her book(boy, do I remember that feeling) and back to the humble task at hand. Through a strange twist of fate, William Barlow, the young law clerk who has caught Mina’s eye, needs to present himself as married to his rich uncle. And so the debacle begins...

“You lied to your uncle?”
...”No, not outright. I merely led him on a merry word chase and he arrived at a particular conclusion.” It seems Will has a talent for deception. He is a likable chap, but will he be able to convince his uncle that he has mended his ways?

Mina is a fun character, too. Looking at a lifestyle she can never hope to attain, she believes she cannot effect worthwhile change unless she is wealthy. Many people feel this way. Perhaps they don’t realize that they can sometimes change their world, one person at a time. Mina does not realize the way she prods Will to be a better man, nor the joy she brings to Uncle Barlow with her discussions of Dickens quotes.

Michelle Griep is a name I now associate with great expectations. Her writing flows so smoothly, effortlessly, in any genre. In this book Griep has included an appropriate quote from a Dickens tome to head every chapter. And Griep’s action causes her story to progress at a very comfortable, yet compelling tempo. I couldn’t help getting caught in the current and pulled into the novel. Traces of humor and amusement are tucked into her writing. I feel like I am discovering gold nuggets in a stream as I happen upon Griep’s unique and clever verbiage.
Some of my favorites
“He wore his wrinkles like a garment, the deep creases on his face in sore need of a good ironing.”

“Effie pinched the bridge of her nose, and Mina desperately hoped the action would coax out some golden wisdom for her to follow.”

“Caught between the fangs of the tiger and the three man-beasts roaring in a fury, Mina edged back a step.”

Superior story, superior writing, superior read. Period.

I gratefully received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Celebrate Lit. This in no way influenced my opinions, for which I am solely responsible. I was not required to leave a positive review.
A Tale of Two Hearts gets my honor of Best Novella of 2018. This is the Michelle Griep I know and enjoy--someone who takes little-known historical periods or character types and makes them three-dimensional and unique, if in a short time span. Once again, the Dickensian setting pops, and drips with well-researched authenticity. I wanted to go to the Golden Egg Pub (kind of a coup since I don't drink), ). I wanted to visit Uncle Barlow's estate, and Purcell's--oh, Purcell's! How perfect could you get?

The characters shine as well. I don't see this often, but the main reason they shine is because they're flawed. Mina, Will, and the others are not unlikeable (except for Percy and Alice; you'll love to hate them). But they are fully human, and they make the wrong choices at times. What makes them endearing though, is that they recognize those choices and sometimes have to live with regret, but always try to do better. While I might have liked to see a little more dependence on God and spiritual development for that, what exists works really well. The symbolism of the second chance coin is a particular selling point.

Michelle gives plenty of time for relationships to grow, develop, and change, which gives the story a great emotional arc. The romance between Will and Mina is well done, but I think here, the relationships Mina forms with other characters, especially her father, stands out. There's a subtle moment at which you get the feeling that they understand they've misjudged each other, and the love there is quite satisfying.

The plot moves forward at a good pace, and the story hangs together well. Some quirky secondary characters provide both comic relief and flavoring, and overall, this is a pretty big improvement over 12 Days at Bleakly Manor (though that's also a good one). Bravo, Michelle--I'll be joining you at The Old Lace Shop!
