I've been dealing with the issues presented in this book for several decades. I've been through therapy multiple times and it has always been helpful. I've read countless self help books and I have learned a lot. However, I had never encountered a book that helped me before I even finished the second chapter until I got this book. I have already begun to understand myself better and to understand that the way I feel about myself may not accurately reflect who I really am and how valuable I really am. If you are struggling with any of these issues I feel very confident that this book will really help you!Tags : Compassion and Self Hate: An Alternative to Despair [Theodore I. Amazing!
Not an easy read - but good info here none the less. Be prepared to read it slowly and digest the info. Some good concepts and ideas I have never thought of before and haven't read in other books.
most therapists won't even touch this subject, but Dr. Rubin enables the reader to tell when an action or behavior or though tis self-hating in all its many disguises and how to snuff it out using cognitive techniques and compassionate antidotes. I have three copies. The language is not simplistic. This is not self-help in 3 or 5 or 10 easy steps.
I recommend this book as adjunct reading to Byron Katie's work. Goes into depth as to why we are suffering creatures. Katie's work will help you take it apart, but this book will help you see the depth to which humans hate themselves.
This book changed my life. I've bought copies for countless friends, and reread it I don't know how many times. If you are suffering, if you never feel good enough, if you're unhappy and don't know why, do yourself the kindness of reading this book.
Lately I've read so many self-help books about addiction that I'm beginning to notice a lot of similarities. When I read them now, I'm really just looking for the one thing I didn't already know. But that wasn't the case with "Compassion and Self-Hate An Alternative to Despair" by Theodore Rubin. I would even hesitate to call it a self-help book. I would call it an "answer to all my problems" book.
I didn't realize until I read "Compassion and Self-Hate" that my self-loathing was at the root of my destructive behavior. My feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy led to a disastrous lifestyle that manifested itself in a severe drug addiction. Rubin perfectly describes me, or the way I used to be, several times - "Such people often look and act exceptionally passive. But this passivity, in relation to other people, masks an extraordinary active process of diminishing and demeaning oneself, which leaves little or no energy for the so-called pursuit of happiness," and - "If other people like them, then they like themselves for the moment. If someone, anyone, rejects them, then they feel destroyed." I learned that if a friend talked to me the way I talked to myself, I would have to rid that person from my life. I failed to realize that intrusive thoughts of self-hate can be ignored, or better yet, completely eradicated. I have to give up my false image of super-human standards, practice humility, stop second-guessing myself, stop injustice collecting, accept that rejection is inevitable and a part of life, and give up my need for total acceptance from others. After reading this book, I've decided to let go, relax, stop berating myself, and let be what will be. I will no longer feel bad because I haven't accomplished enough, achieved enough, or conformed enough. And I will no longer give up living in the here and now to futilely chase after a better future that is always just over the horizon.
When I first read "Compassion and Self-Hate" almost a year ago, it effected a total paradigm shift in my thinking. This isn't one of those touchy-feely books that have you repeating silly, daily affirmations in the mirror. This is a practical guide that will change your life if you suffer from addiction, alcoholism, depression, or any other destructive behavior or emotion. I will read "Compassion and Self-Hate" again and again because I want this to sink in.

I am about 1/3 into the book and so far it has been helping me. I especially liked the beginning of the book and felt comfort in knowing that this established psychiatrist who treated many people started his book by saying that he himself had low self-image and self-hate. There are stories about other people who have similar issues and feelings as I do and it is helpful to read on about others' stories who in turn make me look at myself and realize that I was carrying so much weight and guilt on my shoulder. All that heavy weight and a sense of not wanting to live, that I was vile inside and the destructive need to stay in that hole with too many mirrors was hard to shake off.
I also wanted to express that if you have a friend, mother, brother, sister, boyfriend or girlfriend who struggles with self-love, who is disgusted at him/herself and you don't know how to help them, give this book as a gift. Often they are desperate for your help but when you try to reach out they reject you or push you away and you get discouraged, angry and hurt. Please know they do not mean it. They just don't know how to get out of that hole as it is so hard to climb out of it alone. Try getting 2 books, one for your loved and one for yourself, whether you suffer from low self-image or not. What will happen is that you will get to understand what the person is going through in a better way. More importantly, by reading it together you are supporting the person. It's easy to dictate the person to do this and try that, but how often does that work?
